Simple DIY center console inverter

Dont want cell phone charger cables hanging over your shifter and passenger seat? Try this easy mod to keep your electronics in your center console.

First, get a small power inverter. I chose the duracell pocket inverter with one outlet and a USB port.

I cut off the plug, separated the wires, and used a multimeter to check the polarity of the wires.

Drill a hole in the compartment just larger than the thickness of the inverter cable, in the area shown.
Then, pull the inverters cable through. Youll need to remove the plastic section from around the shifter. Do this by prying up on the corners shown.

Pull the white connector out from the back of the power port and cut the wires. Connect the inverters wires to the wires for the power port, keeping in mind which wires are positive and negative. I used 3M three way connectors, but plain old electrical tape would do. It would also help to extend the short power port wires, otherwise it will look like a tangled mess as shown here.

Place a healthy wrap of tape around the inverter cable at a place that allows the inverter to be moved around a bit. The tape will keep it from being pulled out any farther.
Plug the connector back into the power port, and put the plastic back into place around the shifter. Mount the inverter any way you like, or just have it lay loose in the center console if you wish. I used adhesive velcro to attach it to the side so it can be pulled out of the console if I want.
