Aux MP3 player jack noise in 07

First off what a fantastic site! Over the last two weeks I scoured many topics to help me decide what year to trade up to from my 01 2wd Sport Edition. This resource was invaluable - thanks!

I decided on a used 07 4wd limited. I picked it up Sunday and it's sweet.

However one of the features that I really looked forward to has been a let down.

The aux mp3 jack in the center console creates 'noise' when using my Garmin Nuvi 360 when plugged into the 12 volt cigarette lighter. Indeed the toyota manual says "When using a portable audio device connected to the power outlet or cigarette lighter, noise may occur during playback. If this happens use the power source of the portable device" - (meaning use battery power).

I searched the threads but did not find anyone discussing this.

I've already added a remote cig outlet under the dash to (just hide the power wire), but now I'm guessing I'll have to install a toggle switch so I can turn off the outlet and run the Garmin on battery power when listening to music, or making calls over bluetooth. (I don't want to have to remove it from the mount)

Anyone know of an alternative, like maybe some sort of noise cancelling audio cable?

Noise Filter

You need a noise isolator; a simple filter that plugs in between your aux jack and the NAV (or mp3) unit.

There are several on the market. I installed this one in my daughter's Mazda3 and it works flawlessly:

Radio Shack carries them also. Go figure.

Neither Radioshack or Fry's Electronics carried a ground loop noise filter with the 3.5mm audio plugs.

Take your vehicle to the dealership. There is a TSB for this problem and they should fix it under warranty. Lots of 4 runners have this problem. Mine does but I have yet to go and get it fixed. You can find the TSB online so you can give them the exact TSB( Technical Service Buliten) number. Check this site it's on here somewhere.

DWW - Thanks for the information. After searching this site, I think you are referring the 'Pop Noise on FM Radio Station' TSB that was for certain 06 4Runners. I found the thread and TSB attachment Here

I also searched the internet for 4Runner TSB's and could not find it for 06 or 07 4Runners here:

That FM noise problem is not the same as my issue which is specific to using the aux input only while using the cigarette lighter adapter for power.

I'm sure hoping the ground loop noise filter I ordered from Crutchfield will take care of it.

How much did it cost to do this? Is it simple to install?

It was inexpensive. The 12 volt cig lighter from the local auto parts store was $9.00. The in-line mini fuse connector and box of 15-amp mini fuses was like $10.00.

I mounted it under the dash to the metal bracket that the brake pedal is mounted to so I didn't need to run a ground wire. I tapped in the power wire to the 15 amp fuse (in dash) that powers the factory 12 volt outlet in the center console.

Because I wanted my Garmin Nuvi to have the ability to stay on even when the the 4Runner is not running, I also installed a lighted rocker switch to turn the whole thing on and off. The switch was $4.00.

The lighted rocker switch is installed to the blank button in the dash.

It came out really good.

Thanks to this thread, I just ordered my noise filter from crutchfield.

I just started experiencing this a couple months ago on my '07...

For those still in Warranty, Toyota will fix this for no charge. There's an inline filter that goes between the input and the stereo......

My extended warranty covered it, since I was 2k over factory warranty.

There's a thread or two w/ TSB #'s and info in the Audio section I think.

HTH anyone who hasn't already fixed theirs as the Toyota fix works perfect w/ my Sirius Satellite radio.

wait a second, will this fix the craptastic audio quality (in the case of an ipod) or just the scratchiness?

I was looking to get a new deck so I can hook my ipod up as I only use the stock input in desperate times

Introduction

Some customers may notice noise in the auxiliary mode of their audio system when using an MP3 player or other external audio source connected to the 12V power port of the vehicle. An improved auxiliary port and in-line filter has been developed to improve this condition.Use the repair procedure below to install the new in-line filter and auxiliary port.

1. Remove the existing auxiliary port terminal from the vehicle.





Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS):

2. Install the revised auxiliary port wire harness and noise filter.

Tape the noise filter to the back side of the trim panel near the auxiliary port ensuring the filter does NOT touch other parts or the wiring harnesses in the vehicle.

NOTE Steps A - D are generic installation instructions. The 2007 model year Camry installation is provided as an example.





A. Connect the vehicle wire connector (4P) into the filter and connect the filter wire connector (8P) into the filter.





B. Secure the filter to the vehicle wire harness using wire ties.





C. Install the NEW auxiliary port to the console box.





D. Connect the filter wire connector (8P) into the NEW auxiliary port.

3. Reassemble the vehicle in reverse order of disassembly.

4. Verify proper operation and that NO noise persists in the auxiliary mode of the audio system.

Both my Sirius Radio and mp3 player when hooked to the aux input have a sound quality comparable to the CD player......My stock SR5 system sounds OK, it's not bad, but my last truck had Kenwood and Infiniti for a system and there's no comparison.

As for the aux input, once the inline filter is in, it removes the alternator noises that came from powering w/ the 12v plug creating a ground loop issue. Putting a filter on the aux input instead of the 12v makes the sound clear for those who "hard wire" their devices into the vehicle.....a ground loop isolator inline the 12v plug wouldn't help those who hard wired.....

this crap-jack from Crutchfield doesn't really work -- i still get crackling & static from the slightest movement of my ipod and the cables. Waste of $25...and they (Crutchfield) don't even refund your S/H, ridiculous. I'll just be taking the 4R into the dealership...

Funny seeing this thread today as I just got back a few hours ago from having this TSB performed by my dealer. I would suggest if your 4R is still under warranty, have them fix it for free rather than pay for something to fix it, even if it is an easy fix. Below is some info you might find helpful, as my dealer seemed a bit confused on this TSB when I first mentioned it.

A couple of hours. Just make sure you call in advance to schedule an appointment so they can order the parts. Sometimes dealers want to "diagnose" and confirm the problem before they will perform TSB or warranty work. My dealer has been pretty good about taking my word on things and saving me a trip up there for them to look at it before they order the parts.

Ok...looks like my problem [could have] solely been my $20 Monster cable ... :wtf:

I took my 4R to the dealership on Sat morning, and they supposedly performed the TSB in an hour's time. I get back in the car and drive home, and STILL experience horrible crackling, popping & static out of my ipod. I take it back to the dealership later that day, and they give me this short and cheap audio cable ... and the distortion goes away??? :wtf:

I spent $20 on that stupid Monster-brand cable 2 years ago thinking I'd get the most sound quality out of my aux device ... and you mean to tell the thing just goes bad altogether? A simple audio cable??? Ridiculous :bash:
