4th Gen: How did you plug the holes in the wheel well?

I picked up 2 Master Plumber (Home Depot) Diaphragm for American Standard Aquaseal cartridge.
ULN AS-2 UPC code 7 73497 00006 6

These rubber plugs have a 5/8" center piece that seemed to fit like a glove in the 2 major holes -- one over each wheel well. But what about the other little oblong and round PITA's that also contribute to the mess under the hood?

If you plugged your mud leaks, what did you use?

What else would you use: DUCT TAPE of course!
The real stuff though (all metal foil tape). Auto supply stores carry it as body repair tape. A dozen or so small pieces fit to size did the trick to keep the engine bay cleaner than without.
 
What are you guys talking about? 4runner is new to me only 1800 miles. Is something contributing to making the engine bay get dirty? In my past vehicles I just wash the engine every 6 months. Can you explain to a new 4runner owner :)
 
Hopefully, the '04 has been properly patched. Open your hood and make sure that there is light shining down on one of the wheel wells. Now, put your head near the top of that tire and look up into the wheel well. If it was like mine, you should see a 5/8" hole almodt dead center on top, plus a couple of other little bastards. Drive through some mud and you'll be amazed ay how much of it ends up in the engine bay.

Below is a pic of the drivers front wheel well and the feature of having several holes. I'll post another pic with the largest hole plugged. The plugs seem to work well.

I'll duct tape but it's gonna be sticky and eventually peel away ...

Sorry that I can't take pics. I used small pieces of good quality foil tape and put them top and bottom of each hole (inside and outside). That way they stick to the fender liner and to each other. Makes a world of difference for mud and tire spray cleanliness in the engine bay.

I wonder if these holes designed for some purposes?

My 04 has the holes. I just checked it out and used some clear packing tape (very sticky and adheared well to the inside wheel well). I'll check and see how it is doing after it rains this week. As hard as this tape is to get off of a packing box it should stay forever. That is a dumb place to have holes. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm headed out to home depot to buy these plugs, thanks for the info. How about chewing gum for the small holes? :)
 
I found them in the plumbing isle. Good luck. Don't go during a shift change else nobody is around to help you ;-)
 
In response to the poster who asked what the holes are for? As we all know, the 4runner is made for other countires as well as the U.S. It is a mounting hole for some option that we dont have. Look at a Toyota truck that does not have ABS and you will see those holes there where it would be mounted. Toyota is not going to change die machines to make seperate fender wells.
 
Thanks Toyo for clearing that up. I will check my engine bay to see how many holes I need to cover up..
 
The plug for those holes is 90950-01955. It is for the larger size round holes. Look on the pass side firewall, you will see where they use this plug. I am going to get some on Wednesday, I will see if they have something for the oval holes.

I was thinking it's the Home Depot part number, but I don't have my receipt any more. Then I read the bit about the firewall, so it's probably a Toyota part for a hole of the same size. If so, I'd be interested in knowing the price and seeing a pic. The plugs I used protrude slightly into the wheel well so maybe Toyota's are more cosmetic.

If anyones interested, I can take a pic of the Home Depot plugs for comparison. Let me know.

Yes, That is the Toyota part#. If you want to see what it looks like, look on the pass side firewall, about 4 inches down from the cowl. It is black, round, it just pulls right out. It is a nice little rubber plug. I think it is about $1.50.
 
Toyota plug on the left, Home Depot on the right. Toyota is obviously more appealing to the eye, Home Depot might be less costly and more convenient.

Both will protrude into the wheel wheel by about 1/4" or less.

I noticed my engine was a lot dirtier than my brother's accord (which is 4 years old) now i know why!

When you guys talking about washing the engine bay, how do you go about doing this?? Anything to tape up or avoid? Are you using a pressure washer?
