2000 Limited 4WD mileage

ok, so i have researched a little bit, and since my both my brother and sister have a 3rd gen as well, i noticed that if they are lucky they can get around 300 miles to the tank....but i on the other hand am a 4wd model versus their 2wd models and am struggling to get 200 miles to the tank. i have looked on the site and noticed that other 2wds are right about there as well. my question i guess is, what are other 3rd gen 4wd models getting? thanks in advance guys.

I get around 300 + per tank most the time.
2 months ago, I went to the San Fransisco Airport and it was 93 miles one way. Both ways back it ran up close to 190 miles and I only used half a tank that day.

How is your air filter? Is yours engaged in 4wd?
 
ive cleaned my air filter...not anything special...and no my 4wd is not engaged. its off and in 2wd. i understand that 4wd vehicles will obviously get less mileage, but i think that this difference is too great of a difference.
 
Don't fill up when the fuel light comes on. Your average fuel economy should be in the 18 range(+/- 1 or 2). Also the fuel sender unit in yours is likely malfunctioning, a common issue on that year, which says your fuel level is lower than it really is. There is a TSB on it but I don't remember where I found it. I have gone 300+ highway miles before but my fuel light was on for a long time. I use my trip meter as primary and the fuel gauge to back it up.

How many gallons does it take to fill up?
Accurate way to compare fuel consumption is to get an miles per gallon figure.
 
yea i also have a 2000 4runner and my fuel gauge is all screwed up..after i fill up at the pump i go through my first quarter tank in about 30 miles. but i still get about 275 miles until i fill up. and when i do fill up im only filling up about 15 gallons which means i still had 3.5 gallons in the tank when i thought i was empty. i wish i could fix the gauge. has anyone fixed their fuel gauge and if so HOW?
 
I found this here Accessories: An occasional problem on this vehicle is the failure of the Combination Meter Circuit Plate #3 for the Fuel Gauge, and the Fuel Tank Sending Unit. Problems with the Combination Meter Circuit Plate #3 and the Fuel Tank Sending Unit will cause the Fuel Gage to indicate an incorrect fuel level. The cost to replace the Combination Meter Circuit Plate #3 is estimated at $152.31 for parts and $65 for labor. The cost to replace the Fuel Tank Sending Unit is estimated at $159.33 for parts and $130 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

I decided not to worry about it on mine because I figured if I fixed it I would continue to do the same thing as before and find myself stranded on the side of the road with an empty tank :awais:

On my '98 4runner Limited I get about 16-17 miles per gallon. I've changed the air filter, done the deckplate mod, and have installed a new muffler. This figure is on all city driving on quite hilly roads. This also includes using four wheel drive for about 20-30 miles.
 
Most 4wd see about 16-18 in the city and a little over 20mpg highway. 5 speeds will see anywhere from 30-50 better a tank with depending how much highway you see.

I have slightly bigger tires and drive a bit agressive and usually 75mph on the highway but not too much of that and I'm usually getting between 16-17.

Most of us only fillup with 15-16 gallons since that is normal by the time the guage appears to be really on empty. There is a unuseable gallon or a bit more that is impossible to suck up sicne the pump doesn't sit on the bottom of the tank.

My mom has a '99 Limited 4wd that is bone stock and she sees about 280 a tank with mostly city driving and that figure has jumped up a bit over 300 with mostly highway.
 
I just picked up a '99 Limited 4WD, and noticed same thing on first fill up. The "Low Fuel" light was on, guage on E, and topping up the tank only took 14 gallons.

Anyone on the board have a different experience and take more fuel when the low fuel light comes on?

If I run my 99 limited 4wd down to below E, I can pump about 17 gallons into it till it clicks off. If I pump real slow after that I can usually get around 19 gallons in it till the gas is actually to the top of the neck.

Now I have the factory rear diff lock so I'm pretty sure I have different gearing. 4.30's I believe (4.10's if you don't have the rear locker). When I cram 19 gallons into it I can usually get around 315-320 miles to a tank in city.
 
The low fuel light is just a warning and you usually can drive another 50 miles with it on and if you fill up right when it comes on then 14 gallons might be a bout right.

I get so-so mileage with my leadfoot and my last tank was right at about 248 miles to my last tank and my fillup was at about 15 gallons.
 
When I had my stock 31" wheel/tires I was getting about 17 city and 20 highway. I've since raised 2.5" added 33" M/T and I'm about a lovely 15 city and 18-19 highway. When I fill up from E per say, it takes about 15 gallons. Needless to say, I've eased up on the heavy foot.
 
You also might want to consider doing the deckplate mod, or what I did. All I did was cut 2 large holes in my air box where the deckplate will go and put screen there. That brought my mileage up about 2 MPG. I get around 250 per tank.

Any marine/boat shop will have them and probably a few sporting goods stores that sell fishing boats might have them too.
