DETROIT - High gasoline prices and a weak economy took a toll on U.S. sales of Toyota Motor Co. and Ford Motor Co. vehicles in June, with Toyota reporting a 21.4 percent decline and Ford dropping 27.9 percent.

Industry analysts had predicted June auto sales could drop by double-digits to their lowest monthly rate in 16 years.

Toyota, however, had been expected to fare better because it has a lineup more tilted toward small fuel-efficient cars and crossover vehicles.

But it didn't. Toyota said Tuesday its car sales dropped 9.4 percent for the month, while its truck sales slipped 38.9 percent. For the first half of the year, Toyota sales were down 6.8 percent.

Ford shares sank to a new 52-week low, while rival General Motors Corp. shares were trading near their lowest level in more than a half century.

Dearborn-based Ford blamed the latest sales decline on high gas prices and low consumer confidence, which sent buyers to the sidelines. It reported steep drops in June sales of pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, including a 41 percent year-over-year decline for the F-Series pickup, a perennial best-seller, and a 52 percent drop for the Ford Explorer SUV.

U.S. auto sales had already fallen for seven straight months as of May, the longest period of consecutive monthly drops in eight years, according to the auto information Web site Edmunds.com.

When customers do buy, they're picking smaller cars, crossovers and hybrids. The demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles has been a boon to Japanese automakers such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., which rely less heavily on trucks and sport utility vehicles than the Detroit Three.

For the first half of the year, Ford's sales were down 14 percent compared with the year-ago period.

Ford said sales of its smallest car, the Ford Focus, rose 28 percent in the first six months of the year, although Focus sales fell in June. The automaker said last month it plans to increase production of the Focus as well as the Mercury Mariner and Ford Escape small SUVs.

Ford shares tumbled 32 cents, or 6.6 percent, to $4.49 in afternoon trading after sinking to a 52-week low of $4.41 earlier in the session. They have traded as high as $9.64 over the past year.

The Associated Press reports unadjusted figures, calculating the percentage change in the total number of vehicles sold in one month compared with the same month a year earlier. Some automakers report percentages adjusted for sales days. There were 24 sales days last month and 27 in June 2007.

With even Toyota losing money these days, i wonder if the day will come when Ford will either close down or be sold to some foreign firm (e.g. Chinese, India). You see the same trend among airlines closing down and cutting flight routes.

Gas does indeed fuel our society....

Yep, 4Runner sales really took a big hit in June, down 48.9% compared to June of '07 and down 38.2% for the year according to Toyota's North American Pressroom:

http://pressroom.toyota.com/Releases/View?id=TYT2008070177210

4RUNNER........2,839....6,256....-48.9....27,121....44,194....-38.2

FJ was even worse, down by over 57% :awais:

FJ CRUISER........1,701....4,483....-57.3....16,662....29,754....-43.6

GX is also way down:

GX........860....1,848....-47.6....8,764....10,506....-16.0

Interestingly, even Prius sales were way down for the month:

PRIUS........11,765....17,756....-25.5....91,440....94,503....-2.6

I'm not too surprised Prius sales are down. It still takes gas to run them, and with food, heating/electric/utilities prices increasing also, who has money to buy anything right now?
Once the economy recovers some and gas prices remain relatively high, I bet Prius sales jump. SUV sales will increase too, but never to the levels of the late '90s early 2000s SUV orge.

Don't forget the price gouging by some dealers on Prius (and other hybrids). Therefore, there is not as much incentive to buy a Prius as opposed to a Corolla (or even a Camry), which you can get discounts and special financing on.

IMHO, big SUV sales are screwed for a long long time...there is a reason why GM is trying to sell Hummer brand because they know that there is no future in big SUVs. For GM to consider selling their once-profitable brand so fast, i believe that high gas prices (relatively speaking of course) are here to stay.

I find this stuff interesting, so I'll point out a few things:

1. As the AP story says, these are raw figures. There were only 24 selling days in June versus 27 last year so there's a built-in decline of about 11%. This is true for all the companies. In Toyota's case, sales were really down 11.5% for the month and 6.2% YTD. Bad, but not as bad as the mass media headlines make it sound.

2. Toyota is not losing money (as far as anyone knows). Like most Japanese companies its fiscal year ended in March, and for fiscal 2008 it earned 1.7 trillion yen, and increase over fiscal 2007. They won't release quarterly results for a while but it's likey not that they are losing money so much as not making as much as they'd like. (The same can't be said for the domestics, of course).

3. The issue with the Prius is a bottleneck in hybrid battery supply. They are actually producing fewer than they did last year, at a time when demand has spiked. A couple of weeks ago when I took my Land Cruiser for an oil change I saw my salesman and he said he'd buy my Prius for more than I paid for it new, because they can't get them.

This is a fascinating time for all of them, especially the domestics.

I will believe it when he actually hands you a check for more than what you bought it for....:p Otherwise, it's just another salesman BS.

I agree with your other good points...however, you gotta look at what Toyota just put out in the market 2007 and now in 2008...Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Tundra, Toyota Highlander, and Toyota Corolla (i am sure i am missing a Yaris or something), but my point is that these new redesigns (except Corolla) cannot come at a worst time! The domestics are suffering from the same, but you gotta wonder that Toyota just put out these big boys at the wrong time...and maybe it is out of Toyota's control because this gas price hike came suddenly and these vehicles began their redesign several years ago.

But, like you said, Toyota has nothing to worry about...i fear the domestics will cave in soon....

Oh, i am sure that Mercedes will not prolong production of the G-wagen after 2010 with these poor SUV sales and gas prices. :( Oh well, my G will be unique...Aztec unique! :D

No argument there. It really is amazing how consumer behavior has turned on a dime. Two years ago a full-size pickup, and arguably a real family-hauling SUV were thought to be the holes in Toyota's lineup, because the previous gen Tundra and Sequoia just weren't quite to American taste. Now I'm sure Toyota regrets building the big San Antonio truck plant, if the GM guys are right when they say this is a permanent shift. Time will tell. Heck of a time to buy a truck, though, if you need one.

If I were Chrysler, I'd be worried. From what I can tell, all they have in their back pocket is "some people will still buy Rams." At least Ford and GM have some bright spots, and some products coming in the next couple of years. Chrysler reports sales tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see how they look.

GM stocks traded at the lowest in 50 years .

I don't trust news media at all . very biased.

Still strange on how the big 3 are closing plants left and right while Toyota and Honda are building plants.

Any type of vehicle is not selling well as predicted.

The hybrid scam is sucking more and more people in , and the car companys don't care since they are only after the money to stay afloat anyway.

Compared the net worth of the auto companys and see where toyota falls in compared to domestic. Unreal !!

Yeah, maybe i should go ahead and buy a Jeep Rubicon now before Jeep shuts down...because i can't see how Jeep is gonna make thru this since Jeep's major players are SUVs with not so hot fuel economy. :( The only thing that is prolonging Jeep's existence IMO is that Jeep vehicles are sold along with Chrysler and Dodge vehicles in the same dealership most of the time. And Wrangler line is actually still selling well.

The hybrid scam will continue to suck people in. Its funny, if you set up a camera on an affluent hollywood street, you would see something like this: Escalade, LX 570, Prius, Hummer, Prius, Navigator, Prius... see the pattern? Hybrids are about image, not actually saving any money. Wanna save money? Buy a stripped down Fit or Yaris. Trouble is, Americans aren't used to riding in noisy little cars with little comforts. We would rather ***** about gas instead. People are also ignoring depreciation as they rush to downsize to a smaller car. Depreciation over 5 years will cost you more than gas ever will, unless it goes up to $7/gallon, which I don't buy anyway.
I wish the public transit system was better in my city...
How is it in your respective towns? I can't even route a bus from home to work and I only live 10 miles away! That's like $4 a day to get to work. But I'm getting to work in comfortable and safe vehicle so I'm good to go!

Could not agree more.
