I kinda like the Avalon...it's like the FWD, piss-poor-man's version of the Lexus LS430. It gets pretty good MPGs too for it's size, certainly better than most (if not all) crossovers. Apparently, Avalons are not selling well and don't hold value either. 
I might get one in the near future, esp. if steep discounts can be had.
Have you guys heard if quality is good on these Avalons?? Initially, when they first came out, Avalons had a lot of quality issues.

Yeah me too. I have a friend who is very well off financially but his job is such that it would not look right for him to show up to work in a flashy car. So he drives an Avalon and a Land Cruiser thinking who could complain about him driving a Toyota
That's too bad about the SC - I was kind of looking forward to seeing what the 3rd gen would look like.

My next door neighbor has an '07. I was really impressed with the interior (he let me sit in it). Doesn't seem like a poor-man's anything - I was thinking "Lexus" to myself. I really like Avalons. I might have to go and test-drive an '08.

back on topic... never liked the looks of the current gen SC430 its way too 'Boca... the older SC400's were sharp, reminded me of a Supra.
Well Toyota is saying that the story about the demise of the SC and Avalon is "unfounded speculation":

The Avalon also has features that are only found on the Lexus line of vehicles. Sadly it's a slow seller, and Toyota probably doesn't want to expand their line up too much since the Venza is about to debut.
In the 90s when Toyota actually had sports cars, they had 12-15 models. Today with no sports cars, they still have 16 models. I don't think Toyota intends to grow their line up but just go after markets and niches where they see a void.
The first gen SC was a break through in design and styling, even today the original SC has that timeless look and doesn't seem "old". The second gen is meh, doesn't do anything for me and I never quite liked it. Though the interior is one of the most beautiful. (Which more often than not seems to be case with Lexus, good interior with a bad exterior current GS or a good exterior but the interior is lacking, like the ES350.) The later SC430s with the LED tail lights and updated non trash can lid styled rims looked better. Until today's news, I was always under the impression the LF-A is the SC's successor... not really going to miss the SC430.
