There seems to be a slight ticking sound coming from the engine, kinda like valves ticking. This is on my 08 urban runner with 1700 miles. Is this normal? Seems louder then most cars. Am I just koo koo?

no youre not crazy. i heard it on mine too. i started hearing it this last weekend when i was on a trail so i didnt know if that had anything to do with it? i dont know if its bad or not but youre not alone.

:iagree: My '07 does it. Sometimes I think there's four sources for the noise. I never hear them all at once and shame on Toyota for not doing a little better with the NVH aspect of the V6.G.I.G. said:
1) Sometimes the A/C compressor when it 1st starts after a long sit.
2) Occasionally a faint valve tick when very hot (towing).
3) Fuel injectors
4) Thin wall exhaust manifolds lets some noise through...

I noticed my brand new 08 V6 is very loud too. Almost like pinging. Mine hit 1000 miles today and I was constantly wondering if I should put 91 in just to see if it goes away. But...I think it's normal. Sure is loud tho!

yeah.....it is pretty loud for a new car. Oh well....thats why we have warranty.

seems to be just the 08's to me? My buddy has an 05...and I don't hear it on his.

i have an 04 and i hear it too.. thought it was a knock at first, but friend says exhaust leak? or maybe just normal? sometimes louder than other times... ill live with it unless it gets worse

I have 40k miles on my V6 and the pinging is getting louder. It sounds like a rod knocking nowadays. Almost like one of those old, ragged Chrysler engines from back in the 80's.
If I get roll down the window and accel hard next to a wall then you can hear it knocking loudly. I'm thinking of taking it in to the dealer for a checkup.
A note of importance, my ticking/knocking got louder once I allowed the dealership to change my spark plugs at the 30k mile maint. interval.

Yeah, mines pretty loud too when I'm against a median or something like that. I think it is attibuted to an earlier post where CJ3Flyr said the ex. mani's were thin. I was talking to a buddy earlier this week with a V6 Taco and he said they thought the same thing. That and the fuel injectors. But since he put the TRD S/C on it has quieted up due to the different injectors. Odd. At my first oil change I'll bring it up to my dealer. But yeah...it is loud.

seems like the noise is found on most of the newer 4runners....but is it a problem? I hope they turn out as they were designed to. Let us know what you find.

Mine does this as well, has since the day I got it. Currently it has 26k miles. I just figured it was normail and it doesn't really bother me. Whenever I'm sitting in rush hour traffic and have the windows down, you can really hear it cause the sound is bouncing off the median walls.

The V8 had it's origins in the Lexus line-up. The 4.0V6 was and will always be a 'truck' engine. I don't think it gets used in any cars and isn't designed with the last 10% of smooth & quiet, 10% is overstating it, 7%. What we have in terms of noise is very minor, almost neglagible but not quite as nice as the V8. It feels and sounds better than a 3.4L.
We can't complain about timing belts or changing the oil filter so let us have this... hahaha! :lmao:
