Search Engine Tricks - Google

Falls, rather than hijack your other thread, I think I did that already, here are more tricks with google you might find useful. Not sure about the other engines as I don't really use them much. But some stuff I use regularly:

1) Search a specific site: If you want to search for everything posted by a particular user type the following into the google search and click search:

username site:toyota-4runner.org

This will search for anything posted/replied by whatever username you specify. You can also do an advanced search and narrow stuff down by date.

2) Get the weather for a zipcode/city. type in:

redondo beach, ca weather

instant weather on google. works for tons of places and great for planning my next off road trip ;) I always want to know where fresh snow has fallen.

3) Calculator (most people don't know google has a built in calculator) say you want to add, subtract or divide something type in:

2+2

and voila it will output a number.

4) Unit conversions: I use this one quite a bit to convert from the english system to si (and vice versa) depending on the projects i'm working on. so say you want to convert cubic feet to gal:

1 ft^3 to gal

and done....it has been converted.

5) one last one I like to use...google will track packages for you
ups, fedex,...whatever just type in the tracking number.

There are a ton of these little tricks hidden w/in google (kind of like finding hidden stuff in the 4runners) Anyway, these are the ones I use often.

Enjoy!!!

Try "googling" your home telephone number. I had to tell Google to remove me from their list because they had my home address in the results and map. WTF??

Talking

Here's another trick.

On the Google search bar, type "Finding Chuck Norris" then click "I'm Feeling Lucky". Read the results including Google's suggestions, then run.

Could the moderators consider moving this thread and making it a sticky on several of the appropriate forums?

Not quite, the "I'm feeling lucky" button simply brings you directly to the first link in your results.

For example, if you know that if you search for espn, that the first result will be espn's website, you can skip a step and type espn and click, "im feeling lucky" and it will take you directly to that first site, ie espn.com.

If you look at the bottom of that page, you can see it says: This page has no affiliation with Google. Also if you check the web adress, its not google but: http://www.nochucknorris.com/

You cant even use the search box there.

Anyways thought id point that out. Still funny though!

Check Flight Status with Google

if you use this formula in the search bar:

(airline name) + flight + (flight #)

i.e. type "United Flight 594"

You get real-time flight status in the first search result.

Lifesaver if you travel a lot and can be done quickly/easily with cell with internet access.

If you have text messaging on your phone, send a text to Google (466453) and you can get phone book listings or even directions back via text messages. Just remember the driving directions will probably return 5 or more texts to you, so if you pay per text message. . .

You can also put a tracking number into google and it will link you to the satus in the correct vendor; Fed Ex, USPS, UPS, etc. so you can track it easier.

Type 'epic google' on the main page and click I'm feeling lucky. Everything starts growing bigger!
