A Bunch of Used 4Runner Buyers ???

It could be me, but I noticed a lot of members posting buying used 4th generation 4Runners. I got a used 2004 two weeks ago, but I noticed a bunch of posts of people buying them.

Maybe, it is just me. Kind of like buying your 4Runner, then noticing all the 4Runners on the road. They also seem to be going for really good prices. I haven't notice this earlier this year. Is it me, or do you see a trend here???

yes i noticed that, cuz i just bought a used 4runner. well all these are coming off 3 year leases and at a good bargain. I didn't want to spend the extra money in this economy, figure give myself some cushion.
 
Yes, but what I am also noticing that it is almost december and not a single person has signed up saying they just bought a new 2009. Usually by this time each year you can pretty much see the new posts coming in daily say "Hey look what I just bought" Etc. This year it is all posts re: the new leftover 2008 they just got a great deal on. Believe me I realize and am experiencing the economies recent issues first hand, but true enthusiests will buy and sign up on forums regardless. I am looking forward to seeing that 1st person show off his new Trail Edition. Any thoughts.
 
not sure why it's such a surprise

-they make XXX,XXX 4runners / mega mass produced vehicle thus they will depreciate like any other car... being that it's a toyota, it likely has a slightly flatter depreciation curve than say a ford explorer

-silly to buy new esp now regardless of the economy... buying new is a losing $ proposition compared to buying used. for the feel good aspect, some people just have to have new - their $ loss. the 4th gen is due to retire.

-4runners are reliable and utilitarian. no reason to buy new since maint/repair costs are minimal/uncommon.

-toyota doesn't change up the shape too much and that's good. i bought my '03 limited v8 4x4 for $15.5K from a forum member. there's no way i'd spend $35K+ on a new 2008 - it's certainly not even near the vicinity of being $20K+ or 110% better than my older version

and i'm not a bargain hunter either. i love cars, but in the case of the 4runner i can only shake my head at people who are buying new runners right now. it's $ irrational in a big way.

Hello from another used 4Runner owner. You are correct in that a lot of members posting, are buying used 4th generation 4Runners. This just shows that they are savy shoppers. My recent shopping experience went something like this: I decided that I was not going to pay $38-40k for new 2009. I looked at the 2008 and decided that I was not going to pay $32-34k either. I ended up, paying $20k less than the price for an 08, with a V6 2004 SR5 with 48k miles. The vehicle was a leased unit, is very clean, well taken care and has leather interior. If it is half the vehicle that my V6 1998 Tacoma has been, it will be a great vehicle and I will be a happy camper. Basically it all boiled down to a matter of economics for me.

I didn't post any people buying the 08's, there were a few, BUT no 09's. Your right, we should of seen one posted by now. My guess is, Toyota will really slow down the 09's 4Runners this year.

I know used cars are always cheaper, the one post about a 06 Sport with a V8 for $13,500 was unheard of a few years ago. When I looked in 2001 and bought the 01, the used prices were not that much lower.

Basically, I paid $24,000 for my new 2001, which included tax, I just bought a 04 with 41,000 miles for exactly 1/2 the amount I paid for my 01. Yes, I wanted a new one, but with the economy in turmoil, it seemed to make sense.

When I bought mine I wanted a vehicle that I could use in any weather condition and was built well with great reliability; hence the 4runner. I should have bought one 4 months ago before I bought the 540 I just sold - I would have gotten a better deal for my cash and would have a great, dependable vehicle.

Why buy new when you can get a used Runner at an amazing value that has already lost it's value - depreciation is a ***** and I'll let someone else take that hit. Mine is a corporate lease vehicle and besides the fingernail markings she is in excellent shape.
 
Toyota is not releasing 09's until the 08's are gone. There are killer 08 deals out there , but you'll still take a hit on it .

When buying any vehicle (except collector cars) the hit is always gonna be BIG , in these economic times the hits are pretty HUGE.
 
A lot of good information on here! right now there are silly deals with toyota and it competitors, also a lot of people (out here in AZ) are getting rid of these vehicles for 2 opposite reasons!! To either downgrade to smaller, or to upgrade to larger! I just bought a certified used, where the soccer mom traded up for the new sequoia. Theres a dealership in Scottsdale AZ, Right Toyota, that has brand new 2007 Tundra limiteds on there lot!javascript:smilie(':awais:'). Brand new from 07 that never sold. so there are deals everywhere for these trucks right now!

That or the dealer isn't ordering any 2009s. The news just said that Long Beach has tons and tons of new cars from various manufacturers and they're not moving. Many dealers in the Bay Area have shut their doors, though most are Big Three dealers. A near by Lexus dealer wants $48k for a 2007 GS350 withOUT nav. To that dealer, good luck... it's now a two year old model with 58 miles.

Off-topic, but I think Sharp pulled the same thing with their LCD line. I didn't see any hype about the new Aquos line and tons of retailers are offering crazy deals on LCDs.

Funny you say that Uneek!!! I just saw the HUGE price drop in some of Sharps LCDs, I about to buy one!!
Also Off Topic: Waiting for Circuit city's REALLLY good deals!! 10 -20% off was their discount last week, Im waiting for 50-70%!!!!!
 
I personally like the '03-05 front bumpers (foglight and signals together) vs the '06 and above with only the foglights by itself. That's just me.

But, the LED rear tail lights are so cool on the 2006.
 
I like both the 03-05 and 06+ front bumpers, But I do have to agree, the projector headlights and LED tail lights are nice. It is also nice to have the 06+ rear bumpers, it's one piece instead of three.
 
I just purchased a 2005 4Runner Limited V8 (61,000 miles). Picked it up from a Mitsu dealership and talked them down from 19,900 to 18,500. In addition, they offered me $7645 for my 02 Highlander V6 with 135,000 miles (KBB=$4330). So I couldn't pass up on the deal. Had some blemishes along the side as if the previous owner ran along brush. Since it was all on the plastic panels, I had it wet sanded and repainted. Good as new! Downside? The car had been stripped at the auction of floor mats, cargo tonneau cover and the navigation DVD. Upside? Got the DVD for $75 (retails $250) and new OEM floor mats for $80 both on eBay.
 
Leftover 2007's? try the leftover 2006 I found. I do not think I will be pulling the trigger, but their claim is come back in 2 or 3 years and tundras/seq's will be landlocking the lot.
 
I just got a 2008 SR5 V6 4x4 w/26K miles for 18,850.
Dealers were wanting approx 26,000 for comparable 4R, so I went thru a broker.
Just an idea, that I think payed off for me.
 
My local Toyota dealer hasn't had a new 4Runner sitting on his lot since last June. New ones just aren't moving. On top of that as of the 2008 model year Toyota Canada only offers the V8 in the Limited. SR5 and SE can only get V6.
