Replaced fog bulbs - boom

Well, I replaced the stock fog bulbs on my new 08 Sport with Hoen Xenonmatch; they match the specs of the stockers perfect, just whiter. The low beams and high beams work and look great, both the fogs exploded after about 5 minutes. My question, how do I get the broken glass and residue out of the housing now. I tried to suck it out with a fairly powerful hand vac with no luck. Is there an easy way to take the housing out so I can clean it out?

Hoen is sending replacement bulbs, they said there must have been moisture in the housing or contaminates on the glass bulb. I doubt the moisture but I will have to inspect the new bulbs prior to install this time as I did not touch the last ones or look them over before I put them in.

Any thoughts?

Bulbs will commonly blow if any oil from your skin comes into contact with the bulb surface. Put on some latex (powder free) or other gloves. Make sure the bulb surface is clean. Also you can clean the surface with a quickly evaporating solvent if you have touched the bulbs by accident before installing them. If you didn't touch them, it could have been a sales person showing them to someone. Keep that in mind: wipe them down.

As far as removing the broken glass goes, you should be able to remove the fog assembly from the bumper completely. Then when you aren't underneath the car, you can shake the housing and remove everything. Best of luck!
 
Thanks, I was thinking of wiping down the new bulbs with 91% IPA before install. The main ?? is getting the fog light housing out / off the bumper. I can't see how it attaches, there is not much working room up there. I'm thinking the bumper is going to have to come off; which I don't want to do.

If you give me a chance I just happen to still have my front bumper sitting around after we installed the shrockworks one. I'll grab some pics for you and post them so you can see what you are working with.
 
here ya go... I will give you five pictures of one of the lights. It should be really easy if you get a flashlight out and take a look. It might help if you jack up the front end. You could get a little bit more space to work. I have a 2007 so it may differ a bit from year to year, but basically you remove the front black cover with the four clips. Then when that has been removed, there are three clips holding in the light. Two on the sides and one in the back. Take a look and you should be ok. Just don't drop the assembly when you remove them, or it will get a bit more expensive than just the bulb ;):

JBX, could you do me a favor and see it there is a way for me to remove the deflector onside the housing. I want to take that off , it's just 1 screw but you have to access it from the inside and I don't think the front of the lens comes off. I'm not telling you to do it , but just keep your eye's open for me and let me know if it's possible.

Thanks for the photos; when replacing the bulbs I have been able to observe the black clip in the back and the pivot point on the side, I assumed there was one on the other side as well and your photos confirm that. Now, how does it come out without breaking something. It looks like the black clip could be squeezed with pliers, I don't know what to do about the sides; screwdriver perhaps to pry the plastic out enough to clear the nub. The black trim piece on the front is easy and I have that off already.

Anymore tips before I attempt this? I just might wait until the new bulbs arrive and see if they break as well; if so then I have no choice but get the housing out, there will be too much broken glass in there then. Thanks again.

I didn't actually attempt to dissassemble them...I can try that tomorrow...I am extremely tired. I'll let you know ....
 
I looked at them this morning. Pop the 4 tabs that hold in the black cover. That should be very straightforward.

Then you only need to move the light assembly gently left and right to free the two side clips (if you can even call them that). The side points don't really do anything but keep the light in place. The main clip to deal with is the black one in the back. The clip is kind of difficult to press, I used a small screwdriver to push in the clip on the top and the bottom and voila! You shouldn't have any issue...just give it a shot.
 
I just pulled out my fog lights today (2007 4runner) to install some strobe lights. The lights came out pretty easy after the clip in the back was depressed. I would suggest doing the side clips first (from the front) and then doing the back clip, the light should just slip out.

my glass came off my fog light housing, its loose, im bringing it in to dealer to see if its under warranty, i bought this truck day b4 xmas 07, i havent even open my lights, it glass apears to b loose and no glue is holding it in, wish me luck.

What would you suggest for a "quckly evaporating solvent"? I got some bulbs a while back, and in my haste to get them installed, accidentally touched the glass on one of them. So I put a hold on the installation until I sufficiently clean the bulb. I didn't want to use anything too harsh, and actually forgot about it until now.

Any suggestions would be great!
 
My replacement bulbs just came yesterday and I can see fingerprint smudges inside the case around the bulbs; so I have to assume there are some on the bulbs as well. I plan on using isopropyl alcohol (91% IPA) with some Q-tips to clean the bulbs prior to install this time. Hopefully this will prevent this set from exploding.

IPA is the thing to use I completely agree. Acetone may evaporate faster but it is very harsh. You don't need to use Q-tips though...just a clean soft cotton cloth (lint free) or clean microfiber will do.
 
Yeah, I was planning on using some of those blue shop towels with the alcohol. I was also thinking the same thing about the acetone. Isopropyl alcohol didn't even come to mind when I was trying to decide what to use.
 
im at the dealer getting my fog light assembly fix, dude said itll cost me 135, but i told them shouldnt it be covered in the bumper to bumper warranty, and he agreed and didnt mention about money no more, cant u guys beleive it, the glue on the lens was not enough to hold it.
 
well, the service manager said it wasnt cover in warranty, so i had to agure with him, service advisor did tell me its under warranty, but anyways after i argue with him, he was like it has to be heat, then i said the lens shouldnt pop off, so after the arguement, he realize that i always go to the service to get maintnance done, so he did a goodwill warranty repair for me. he didnt want to loose me as a good customer that always takes my truck there, so he had to suck it up and repair lol.
