So I've been tracking my gas mileage for a few months using the 'Gas Cubby' app. I tested fuel mileage with the 31x10.50R15 tires, and continued tracking it after switching to the 285/70R17 tires.
If you look at the graph below, there's three stages. The first stage is with the 31" tires, where I averaged 14.5mpg. The second stage was with the new 285/70R17 tires. The third stage is what interests me...
For the third stage, I have been driving with my ETC PWR mode on. The longer shifts kept the engine in a more optimal powerband, thus making it easier to turn the oversize tires, and in turn yielding better gas mileage as well. I suggest everyone tries it to stabilize your fuel mileage and make your consumption more consistent and predictable.
