Trailer Harness - '99 4 Runner -w/ Factory tow pkg

I tow with my '99 4 Runner LTD Have factory tow package. All trailer lights, wire, harness are new. Not an issue

At the hitch harness, I have right turn signal and right stop. No license light, or left stop/turn.

I respliced a 4 pole connector to the factory wires. No difference.

Dealer said I have a blown "converter". Part will cost $300+ install.

Should I do this or go to hitch place and have them run a pig off the truck lights?

Is it hard to install new converter?

If you wanted to replace the converter you can do it yourself. I would just reuse the old factory wire harness that is connected to you vehicle (make sure that the old harness is in good condition and no shorts). the convertor is a black box behind the left taillight, or was it the right? it behind one of the taillights. just disconnect the two connectors to the convertor and install the new one. repair your wire harness on your trailer before you plug it into your new convertor. they correspond.

Given the high cost of the converter, are the "pigtails" off the rear lights a good alternative?

I posted a thread on a boating forum and a member who has a 4Runner stated he has gone through 2 converters in 3 years.

While I want to stay OEM, I don't look forward to replacing the converter more than once.

Will a shop manual help me on removing the interior trim to get at the converter?
 
I pretty sure the convertor is just behind one of the taillights. and yes these are known for blowing. someone finally go smart on the tacoma convertor and installed a fuse in line with the wire between the trailer plug and convertor. so instead of blowing a $300 convertor you would just blow a fuse.
