Strange way to get a flat tire
No problems the night before but went outside in the morning to find the truck leaning over. Driver side rear tire was flat. It was dark out but saw a 1" long object down low sticking out of the corner where the sidewall meets the tread. Looked like a sliver of stone or rock. Took the other vehicle and came back to change it later.
Turns out it was a piece of WOOD that speared the tire! It's hard and looks like driftwood but I'm nowhere near a lake or ocean.

Tire shop says its not repairable ("in the sidewall".) I put a plug in it and so far it's holding air. I'll run it to see if it holds out this year . I'm into my 5th season and still have tread left but getting due for tires again next year.

No disrespect intended here, but those tire cracks at the bottom of the tread would be of concern to me. I don't know the age of those tires, but to me it looks like there is some dry-rot going on. I would replace all those tires if they all looked similar. It looks like to me the beginning of tread separation.
Good luck.

I hear you but I'm not worried. Just had another sister tire (same age) repaired for a flat due to a small nail. The trusted shop (I've dealt with them for years) had no concerns about the tire integrity or remaining tread depth when I specifically asked. 85,000+ km on the set with a 100,000 km (60,000 mile) tread wear warranty. One more season and they will be done.
I'm just surprised a Mich CT can't repel wood. Writing it off to a fluke.

It is actually more common than one would think. With the exception of hitting curbs or potholes, it is more likely to get puncture type damage, like that, to the rear tires. Apparently if the front tire runs over an object like that, that is lying flat on the road surface, it can cause it to flip and increase the chances that the rear will be punctured by it.

Must have happened between when I stopped for fuel (would have noticed the object poking out of the tire) and parked for the night. No lawnmowers running at night. The spear was in the tire down low and there's no blunt end on the wood (as if it was hammered in.)
I know what you mean about the front kicking up a road hazard. Had this happen on a previous ride with a small flat piece of steel. The guy in front of me swerved to miss it. I didn't see it in time. My front tire hit it and then the rear got slashed.

Working on cars the last 5 years ive seen so many different things puncture tires. My favorite is roadkill bones. Those things can get amazingly sharp.
