Indipendent use of fog lights

Ok, here is the easiest and do-it-your self way to get this to work right.

There is a cleaner way, but you would have to take apart the fuse/relay box.

The way the fog light system works is it gets its power for the relay off the left high beem fuse past the headlight relay. To by pas this you need to completly suply a new power source to the fog light relay. Just trust me.

1. Ok locate the fog light realy in the fuse block under the hood (look under the lid).

2. Pull the relay out using force or what ever tool you can do it with, with out damaging it or aything around it.

3. take note of the positionning of the pins. The one circled is the one you will be suplying a new source to.

4. OK, here is the comfusing part, you need to make little pig tails for the pins. the pin that is picture on the top needs to have a wire about 3 or 4 inches long.

5. I do not have a 115v plug or heated seats, so was able to get an acc power source (hot when ign on) from one of those ralay locations. The wire is there to show you wich line i used. This source hase power when the ign is turned on. so fog can be used freelly.

6. The last step is to plug in the pig tails were the pin would normaly be except for that one.

Sorry i am not too good with thurogh write ups, but as you guys ask questions hopefully my answers will fill in some gray areas.

Just to let you know, to do this the clean way, all you would have to do is suplly the new power source INSIDE the fuse box, but i didnt have the patience to take it apart. Also the half hour i did try to, i almost broke the box.

Nice job on the mod, but if you supply another power source to the fog light relay and you forget to turn your lights off, the headlights and parking lights will automatically turn off, but your fog lights will not.

If your supplied power is from a "hot w/ignition on" source, then the fog lights will always turn off whenever your ignition is off, which also means you can never have your fog lights on without your ignition on.

If your supplied power is from a "hot at all times" source, then your foglights may stay on until your battery dies (assuming you walk away from your 4Runner forgetting to turn them off).

I still think the best way to do this mod (but definitely not the easiest way) is to ground the light blue wire at the combination switch. This will allow the following:

1- Foglights will turn on or off with the switch whenever the parking lights or headlights are on.

2- Foglights will turn off with the headlights/parking lights (including if you forget to turn off your headlights as you exit the vehicle)

3- Foglights will remain on when you switch your headlights to hibeams.

I do like your mod though, but I want my foglights to turn off when I turn off my headlights and parking lights.

In that case, you can grab the power source from the #3 pin of the taillight relay.

#1 is not correct, it will not let you turn on the fogs with th epark lights. to do that you must perform this mod, but grab the power source from the park lights as stated on the post with the quote right above this one

#2 is normal

#3 is what grounding the blu wire will do

Nice Work.

I did mine today. It was a breeze. Spent more time on prep, evaluation, and clean-up than I did on the project itself. I powered the relay from the parking light circuit, meaning that the fogs (when switched on) are controlled by the parking/tail lamps. I'm actually not sure whether or not I care about the fogs staying on with the high beams right now, so I will not bother with the other side of this right now.

Now it's time to upgrade my fogs!

I did this a little bit differently...will post pics later. Also, I will post a copy of the wiring diagram - It was very helpful.

OK...Here we go.

As you can see, I bent the pin out and used a female spade connector (that's what I call it anyway) to connect to the wire. I think that the Parking light relay is located in the kick panel and I did not feel like running another wire through the firewall, so I just tapped the positive wire on the front drivers' parking lamp.

At some point, I will clean it up, but I figured I would start with this and make sure it works.

You guys make me sick. I don't know what it is about electrical stuff, but I just can't get my head wrapped around it. I have been wanting to do this with my fogs but didn't even know where to start. I will have to print all this out and see if I can figure it out this weekend. Thanks.

Let us know exactly how you want your set-up to work (i.e. always able to come on, stay on with fogs, etc.) and I am sure one of us can tell you exactly what you need to do to make it work.

When I had my Maxima, a buddy had done it for me (he has since moved to Florida) where I could turn on my parking lights and my fogs could then be turn on. I think I remember him wiring power off the parking lights in the fuse box, but can't really remember.

Okay ...

I want my fog lights to come on only when I turn the switch to 'fog' position. I also want them to stay on when the high beam is enabled. And lastly, I want all lights (incl fogs) to go out when the ignition is cut. I don't want the fogs on just because the headlights came on.

Does any of the aforementioned accomplish this?

It depends.... do you want the fog lights to come on whenever you turn the switch to the "fog" position AT ANY TIME? In other words, do you want the fogs to turn on even with ALL other lights off?

Yup, that's exactly how it is done.

Unfortunately, on our 4Runners, it's not that easy because we have a "combination" switch, which makes it more difficult. If Toyota would have used a conventional dash-mounted fog light switch, it would be a snap.

To get my foglights to behave the way I want, I have to remove my combination switch and ground the light blue wire. Then I'll have the control/behavior I would like to have....

I am not sure what my mental block is on wiring, but it just baffles me. i would pay anybody that could do it for me, but I see there really isn't anybody in the neighborhood.

I don't need the fogs to come on alone. I have the DRL which is fine on their own. I guess all I want is for the fogs to remain on when the high beams are enabled.

I did this as a 2 part mod. Combo switch and relay rewire (in another thread, not sure how to link to it.) It is actually very easy... so fly me to the sunny south and I'll do it... or if you want to take a drive to the cold north...

Hitman, I re-read what you were saying. The bit about getting the fogs to turn off when using the 'auto-headlights' feature. I don't use that feature. I just want to have the fogs stay enabled when the high beam is enabled. Is there a way to do that?

I don't use the feature either... but I'm saying that if you should forget to turn off your headlights, then they (and the fogs) will turn off automatically anyway.

If the foglights are rewired to a different circuit (that is not tied to the parking lights/headlight circuit) then they will remain on even when your headlights go out automatically.

If you want your fog lights to stay on with the hibeams, just follow 24Runners instructions. It's a piece of cake and you only have to pop your hood to do it!
