Curious auto trans behavior

So, the 85, 4wd, at I just bought has this curious thing that it does and I'm wondering if this is somewhat normal or evidence of a coming problem...

When coming suddenly to a complete stop, there's this muffled, kind of a thud, thud sound corresponding with slight jerks that that sound/feel somewhat like gear changes. If I stop slowly, it doesn't happen. It isn't a really pronounced, click or clank like I would expect from u-joints. It really feels more like the tranny is just catching up with what's going on, but doing rather ubruptly.

Anyone care to share their experience with their auto trannies?

Thanks!
