Looking to get back into a 4runner. Had a 4th gen, sold it, now wanting to get a 5th gen. Found one that I really like, but the seems like it could be a tad lower. They came down to $32,888. I offered $33,500 out the door, but was told $32,888+TTL is the lowest they can go.

Vehicle is located in socal.
Used 2016 Toyota 4Runner (81383A) For Sale in Lancaster CA | JTEBU5JRXG5328168 | Serving Valencia, Santa Clarita, Palmdale & the Antelope Valley

Im pre approved for $35k, but the lower I can them, the more I can put towards mods and what not. Good deal, or not?

Not sure on the pricing I THINK people have said they got new SR5's in that ball park so I would think you would be able to get them down a bit more but at the end of the day if you are ok with the price don't fret over $500.

Side note, I love how you give OTD price and then they come back with a price +TTL.....

With every car I've bought from a dealer I'll begin with negotiating OTD and they ALWAYS come back excluding licensing.. as if I'll forget. It's gotta be part of their "strategy". You can usually get them to make some other concessions if you work at it.

Have you tried carmax? They actually have a pretty large selection of 5th gen 4runners in the low 30k's and they can ship one to a carmax in SD for $800 or less depending on where in the country it is.

I tend to try to find the exact options I want when buying used. You are paying for the option you don't. Do you need the 3rd row seat? Would you rather have sliding deck or Premium edition? As I stated in a post yesterday, you usually can find a Premium that the dealer doesn't know is Premium. If you want KDSS, some dealers don't know the 4Runner has KDSS and price the 4Runner without it. This is true of a place like CarMax. They tend to list the stuff that every 4Runner comes with and not the options. Use a VIN decorder. See my post from yesterday if any of this sounds interesting to you. I got a 2014 Trail Premium with KDSS (I like the full text display in the center console on the 2014 Trail which was dropped after 2014) with 111K miles for under $23K or $24K. Mileage drops the 4Runner resale dramatically and I got free KDSS and some other options they didn't realize the 4Runner had. They priced it as a Trail with sunroof.

That said, if this 4Runner has the exact set of options you want at the highest mileage you are comfortable with. I would close with, they need to throw in an accessory which cost them less. Even a Honda dealership can get Toyota parts cheaper than you can buy them at. Give them the Toyota part numbers. Hood liner and clips OR map update for example. You have map micro SD OE183 (2016) and current is OE184 (2017). This is stamped on the micro SD card. Thing to remember is it is a buyers market. CarMax threw in the hood liner for me. I actually thought it was missing. Be willing to walk. You will ALWAYS find a better deal tomorrow. Just my 2 cents.

Just bought a '15 sr5 4wd (no third row) with 11k miles for right around 32.5 OTD. 1 owner. Had to go 1000 miles to get it.
Deals can be had, but are infrequent. Set up a saved search on car gurus, cars.com, etc. with what you want (including search radius from your zip), but be ready to pull the trigger, because they won't last long if they're a good deal.

This is why I just went new. I got my Trail for 34,500, makes no sense to me that a used SR5 with 20k miles is nearly the same price.

i have never seen carmax be cheaper than buying used private party or from a typical used car dealership, not having to haggle comes with a premium price

Better interest rates...

Buy new. Better interest rates and you get 24,000 miles of service included. I'm sure as a man you can make that a valid justification.

Been on the hunt for about a month now on all the car sale sites. Like I said earlier, seems about 80-90% of the used market are from rental fleets vehicles. You know how that goes, if it ain't yours, drive it like you stole it!

This is why I just went new. I got my Trail for 34,500, makes no sense to me that a used SR5 with 20k miles is nearly the same price.

Was that out the door? A trail would be nice, but the third row is a must for me. A locker is easier to add vs third row seating.

Carmax seemed to be on the high side. Factor in the transfer fee if it's from somewhere not reasonably close.

I just went through this same exercise. The amount most dealers want for these as slightly used cars is stupid, as you can get a new leftover 2016 for another $1000 or so. I started searching for one that was a private party sale BEFORE they traded it in to a dealer.

I found one in San Diego on Craigslist and picked it up last weekend. 2016 white 2WD SR5 w/ 3rd row and 15K miles on it. I got it for $29,500, which was more than the dealer was offering them for a trade in. I was right at $32K after taxes.
