My used TEP came with running boards. I don't hate them (actually I kind of like them) and the wife needs them. If the 4Runner were naked and I was starting from scratch, I'd probably pony up the extra cash for a set of sliders that had a nice tread for double duty.
I've been daydreaming about
Green Lane Aluminum Side Steps / Rocker Guards, mostly because I'm not a hardcore explorer, tough guy, or a poser. They're not steel and won't offer the protection of steel, but steel is heavy. Aluminum would help keep the weight down and would provide a bit more protection than the OEM running boards. Aluminum, for me, might be a good compromise given the type of recreational driving I actually do. The main reason I haven't pulled the trigger is that the shipping for these particular Steps / Guards is pricey.
I also told myself I'd live with the vehicle for a year before modifying it. After six months, my resoluteness is wavering.
