Here's another couple rules that I have found a little hard to follow but generally try to adhere to:
--when solo in remote areas drive a little slower than necessary;
--take breaks often.
The latter will minimize the times you get distracted, which you will if you spend enough time behind the wheel, while the former will help ensure that the rocky step or whatever else you failed to notice because you have been on smooth dirt for a while is nothing more than a rough bump. Having good armor helps with this, too.
