I just got my (first?) 4Runner about a month ago and I was looking to get it on some trails soon. I've done some googling but the info that's out there is pretty vague and it's really hard to tell how technical some of the trails are. I'm not looking for anything crazy, just some nice intro trails, rough enough that I need 4wd, but easy enough that I don't get my self stuck. Bonus points for any place that has some good campsites and hiking as well.

My set up: 2002 Limited on 99 Talls / 5100s running 265/75 Cooper AT3s. Other than that, it's stock (for now...)

I went up to the Fredrick watershed already but all the fun stuff is blocked off, I could have driven that loop in a Mini Coop.

I've heard great things about Flag Pole Knob. It seems like Biery Branch, Union Springs Rd and Dunkie Hollow road are all a lot of fun. I've read conflicting opinions, but it seems like I might want to wait on Union Springs Rd. Is it reasonable to expect I could run Dunkie Hollow or Biery Branch stock? FWIW I'll be solo, but I do have a satellite messenger (DeLorme).

FR 85-2 in between 33 and 818 looks interesting. Also, Long Run Road.

I think Peters Run is my closest option, but it's closed till late March and seems rather mundane in any case.

I'm quite familiar with the area around Wolf Gap / Mill Mt as far as hiking and camping goes, I'd love to find some good trails there. But as far as I can tell, the good stuff (Little Sluice Trail, for one) is only open between Nov and early Jan for hunting season.

Blackwater Falls / Canaan Mountain seems like a great loop too, but that's a little far out. I hiked there years ago and it was gorgeous. May be better for a camping trip this summer.

Any recommendations yall have would be greatly appreciated, or any resources you could point me to. I signed up for TrailsOffroad, but there's not much on there.

Edit: I want to avoid pinstripes as well, for what that's worth. There might be a day when I built this into more of a trail machine and stop worrying about aesthetics, but I'm not there yet.

Flag Pole is a great trip, went for the first time with a local Yota Trucks group back in November. (in my sig...).

There's a group of folks on here more local to the NoVa area that have arranged Flag Pole trips, I'll have to see if I can find one of them...

ETA - here ya' go...

Annual Winter Trip - open to T4R members located in VA/WV/MD/DC/PA
