In fairness, a 1/4 aluminum skid should take that hit just as well as a 3/16 steel.
The difference would be in dragging the skids and in the frequency of use.
But I think what is often forgotten is that the most likely thing to hit when doing ledges/steps is the pax side rear lower control arm bracket as well as that control arm itself.
My pax side rLCA bracket skid has changed shape a few times in just one year--but the bracket is fine.
