Use the correct weight oil, it makes a big difference.
We bought our 5th gen used, dealership (not Toyota) said they just did an oil change on it as they do with all their cars, I drove it a few thousand kms and then did my own oil change, wished I'd done it right away. Engine made better power, and the vvti felt like it worked afterwards! They likely put in bulk barrel 5w30 or whatever they had laying around it it, and it was a dog compared to after with the correct weight oil in it.
If you find it noisy, try a different brand of oil. They are kinda noisy at idle though, compared to a lot of other current gas engines.
