I have done exactly what you're thinking (well, with sport level lights, not pros). I tapped the red wire at the taillight (you should verify) and spliced it with the trigger wire from my switch with a diode on each. Lights work as expected, stock back up lights do not come on with switch, etc. This location leaves a little gap in the center of the vehicle, but you can cut them in and install without removing the bumper skin.
