Maybe just stick some thin foam rubber in the inside to act as a filter and change it every few years. I mostly put metal screen on the inside to keep the mice from trying to move in as I live in a rural area.

Yeah I already stuffed it with foam a year or two ago. Need to change it out. Last excursion I noticed a bit of dust coming in. I'll take a look and see if I can pop it off without removing my aftermarket bumper.
