At ~140K, she blew a rod. It was a hot start and a fast acceleration, and the rod fired out toward the driver-side fender. Online research turned up about ten people with the exact same scenario details as mine. But no Toyota recall on the books meant I had to fix her myself. And I did.

I got a Japanese import engine with only 40K miles installed in her. She was out of commission for a month. She came back purring, and there hasn't been a problem with that engine ever since.

She has 221,486 miles now, so that's approximately 80K more miles she has been driven since the new engine installation. Since 40K miles were already on this new engine that means:

PRESENT ENGINE MILEAGE = 120,000 MILES

In the past five years, I have had new cats and all O2 sensors replaced, new spark plugs and hoses, new belts, valve covers replaced, complete tune-ups.

A month ago, the transmission seized up on me. I love this car. I really do. But my life has changed a lot in the last year. I am moving out of the big and rugged sphere where I have stayed for the past twenty years...

I owned a green two-door Explorer.....a black 4WD Pathfinder.....then, a grey Rodeo, until I found my favorite of them all: this beautiful black 4Runner.

But for the first time in my life, I am going to get a new car with financing (yikes!), instead of buying a used one paid in full. I want the boost on my credit score, and I may as well embrace something shiny and eco-friendly while I am trying new things-- so I am looking, of course, at a new Prius, since I trust Toyota brand.

I will update this post with more specific data on the maintenance that has been done. I come from a long line of engineers, and she has seen thorough and sound mechanical care and attention throughout my ownership of her.

I am asking $2500 for her, which is reasonable for someone who would work on her transmission personally or knows some great gear heads who can, because she is a great car. There is a whole lot of good left in her yet...

Thanks for your time. Good luck.
