You could try to use (CLR) Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover is a powerful formula that quickly and easily dissolves and removes tough calcium and lime deposits as well as surface rust stains.

If you mess the finish up I would go with th he majority and have fun painting it. Ebay might even have a new one if needed. Nothing stays perfect forever anyways so it's a good lesson in that respect. The plastic might wear out but the engine keeps on ticking! Good luck.
