Turbo Build

Edit: took 2 months, but it’s all together and making boost!

So I’ve been dreaming to do a turbo build on the 4runner ever since I stumbled on Clownmeats build thread ( Clownmeat's build thread ) a few years back, but, life is busy, and it’s hard to find the time and money. Anyways, I’ve finally started to acquire parts for the turbo build.

My primary goal in doing a turbo build is…surprise surprise, POWER! I find myself pulling a lot of trailers around, and often find that the 4runner lacks the power to pull what I want. I’ve already done the TBU, and im planning to put a 7 prong + brake controller. I’ve considered figuring out what type of helper springs would work with my rig so I don’t have the issues with sag, but that’s beside the point.

As for the “why not get something more geared toward towing” question, there are several parts to the answer.
1. I love my 4runner, I’ve done a lot of work to it, and it would be hard to part with it.
2. I love driving stick, and there are only a few options for newer trucks that are stick. New Tacoma, and 2019 and prior Ram 2500.
-Tacoma – too small, owned one before, not great for a family. And I had to strap a 2x4 down to keep it from falling out of the bed…seriously. And they can’t tow any more than the 4runner.
-Ram – sounds sweet…sounds expensive

Ultimately, my wife and I decided that it would be cheaper to put some money in to the 4runner to spruce it up, and make it more suited to what I do than it would to go out and get something newer.

I’ve never boosted anything before (other than some larger pulleys for my 89 SC MR2, but that doesn’t really count), so I’m looking forward to learning through this process. I’m planning to try and document what all I do and choices I made and why, which in large part will likely be “because that’s what Clownmeat did”.

I’m also planning to document all my cost as best I can, even if it’s just a cheap bolt or gasket. Clownmeat says he did his build for ~800 bucks, but he also had a lot of parts and things laying around that he was able to reuse (turbo timer, boost gauge, wideband). I’m hoping his estimate of 800 bucks is accurate, because I spent a portion of my budget toward wet oakle seat covers and the TBU.
