I'm not sure how you got that little 3rd gen 4 runner to tow a trailer of that weight and size so well for so long when I can barely get my 96 4runner to tow my 20ft 2000 lb utility trailer empty around town at 60 mphs...lol I would never even try to tow 3500lbs with my 3rd gen for 150 miles let along for 1000+ miles. Here in Az on the 10 you need to move a minimum of 75+ mphs otherwise these damn big rigs will just blow you off the hwy for sport. My 5.7 Tundra is the only thing I trust on that open hwy battling the big rigs all the way to Glamis or California when towing. I literally watch 4 big rigs go by a little crossover towing a little travel camper and they nearly lost control of their vehicle and trailer and flipped on the 8 heading to San Diego. You got the 3rd gen tow vehicle of the year in my book.
