There are a few 140 amps that are made for 4runners, and some people have taken them from other cars and made them work (I recall seeing someone here with one from a DeVille, of all things) but without a winch/compressor/goodies you'll never need above the stock 70 amps. What's the mileage on it, do you know? Could just be going out with age.
Back on my Dodge the first thing I did was replace the alternator, as the stock one was 20 years old. Less than a year later it died on me, and ended up using the original one for the remaining 8 years I had the truck. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose
