fwiw, i've put just about 97k miles on '87 4runner #1, all using generic green coolant. no cooling or heating issues, and it includes a 2016 cross-country trip in july, with a 4-day stay in death valley (126 *F the day we got there) with wheeling. 8500 miles in 31 days, with ambient temps generally in the 90s and 100s.
also, sadly, you might get more response on yotatech, as the t4r forum has lost a lot of traffic over the last two years, and is now pretty lame.

I believe my 1988 did have red coolant when I bought it new. I eventually killed the water pump by flushing and then filling with Prestone green with "silicone silicate formula". That formula was essentially abrasives meant to keep your radiator clean, but wore out the pump seals in the process. That was decades ago, and I don't think anyone uses silicates anymore, so it probably doesn't matter today.
