The upper intake manifold has to come off along with the glove compartment, but not much else. The trans wiring will be a pain because the connectors get stuck due to dirt.
I haven't really heard of harness problems though, so that's a long shot.
The odd problems I had that were something like this (though, not the same) turned out to be the flex PCB on the back of the gauge cluster.
