Looks like a bot visited...

Anyway, the job is all done. Every supply and drain line in the house has been replaced with PEX and PVC, respectively, including cold-weather faucets outside and a softener. Completed last week. Quite expensive (for me) but the peace of mind is worth it. Took them 4 days (2 guys).

Every job has a surprise, and this was no exception. When they pulled the toilets, they informed me that water had been getting past the wax ring (full bath) and foam ring (half bath - apparently these are junk). So I had the top layer of wood in both bathrooms rotting in that vicinity. Had to cut out the bad wood and replace, then put vinyl plank down (pretty solid stuff). Had to wait until they left at 5pm on two consecutive days before I could start, and had to have it finished before they arrived the next day. This meant I was there until 1:30am on the first day, 9:30pm day 2.

I was surprised at how clean some of the galvanized was when they cut it out, considering the hardness of the well I'm on (20 gpg). The vertical pipes had some artery-clogging going on though, and the pressure/flow at the faucets is significantly improved. Drain pipes were cast and pretty solid, but they get flaky on the inside after so many years, and snag stuff (like the baby wipes my youngest has occasionally tossed down, we believe). So now that's all smooth PVC.

Family stayed in a hotel for the duration. Except for the floor repairs, the job went pretty much as expected and as described. I have some drywall repair to do, but really not much - two 3x4-foot sections. Considering the numerous repairs I've had to do and have paid for over the years, and the above-mentioned peace of mind, knowing that there aren't any water surprises hiding out is very calming. If you're stressing over your old plumbing like I was, I heartily recommend getting this done.
