Pictures would help, if you are able to take some.

How were you trying to remove the CV axle? Were you trying to pry or drive it out at the flange, or just yanking on it?

The inner part does slide off so you should be able to get it back together, but you'll likely need a re-boot kit.

Have a look at this video to get a better understanding for how CV axles work & how they should come out and go in.
