Gobi and other basket mesh floor racks definitely have more utility. The aluminum crossbar racks require either someone to sell adapters, or you to be able to move the rails around to meet the dimensions of whatever you are mounting.
Yeah, I debated long and hard about the aluminum rack vs. the Gobi before I went with Gobi. Generally, I’m a form follows function guy, but I just liked the look of the round steel tubing on the Gobi and the traversible mesh floor.
If I were designing a roof rack (and wouldn’t get sued by Gobi if I decided to sell it), I would make it identical to Gobi, but build with aluminum and incorporate slots in the crossmembers for eyebolt tiedowns. I suppose the flooring would have to be thicker in order to be traversible.
