this is great info! The bumpers do indeed wear out and the repair kit doesn't address the problem. I think you have a creative solution to it.
Just this past weekend I had to replace the bumpers on my 1st gen but it's easier because the stopper rod isn't permanently connected to the hinge so a new one can just slide on.
I'd be happy to take you up on the offer for some harvested bumpers -- I do need one for my 99 driver's side! Please keep me in mind as well if you find decent cores at the junkyard as I find myself rebuilding these for forum members and friends on occasion.
