I'm looking to slightly boost the low end torque on my 4R specifically so it stops down shifting from 5 to 4 on slight inclines. If you realllllllly granny drive it, you can get decent mileage, but thats the side benefit of a bit more power. The engine doesn't have to shift down. And when you need some grunt, its there. Especially if you boost the power naturally aspirated. I know the limitations of a 5700lb truck, but its sort of a hobby of mine to squeeze mileage out of cars that shouldn't get it.

how has it been since you made this upgrade? Reliability? Engine note? Filter issues etc.

Thanks.
Last i checked 5th gen 4runners are ~4400-4800 lbs curb weight. You could however be carrying an extra 1000 lbs or so and be within GVWR.

There isn't a lot of performance, tuning, dyno, et cetera information for 4Runners relative to certain other vehicles or Off-Road/Suspension/OV.

At the end of the day, and very much over simplified, with breathing mods if you can move more air mass in and out of the engine and alter the fuel and timing to make use of that air, you can make more power.

So, with proper tuning, breathing mods will change your engine's power curve. How much, and where, is dependent on tuning and characteristics of the mods.

If your 4runner is 2020+, tuning isn't yet an option.

As always, aftermarket parts always carry some amount and type of risk simply from not being the same part that the OE spent millions of dollars and thousands of hours validating. Additionally, by changing said part, you have changed the system, sub-system, assembly, etc.. and therefore potentially the interaction between parts or systems. However, in some cases, the aftermarket part proves to be a solution or even more robust than factory.
