If it's sitting fairly level you have the correct amount of fluid in it. The fact that you drain less out than what you put in simply means it was low on diff oil. Whether that was from a past leak, prior maintenance not performed correctly or......................, doesn't matter much now. What is important is that it is at the right level now. I hope that you inspected the diff breather and replaced it if it was needed.
