How cold was it when you started it and it made 14.7v? How long did you run it before shutting it off? 14.7v might be normal if it's 45ºF out and you only ran it for 10 minutes. I know that AGM batteries can accept 14.7V when it's cold without damage, don't know about flooded lead acid (FLA).
For the last few months, my stock 80A alt (with added voltage boosting diode/resistor thingy)has been giving 14.7V when first started and for the first 5 or 10 minutes of running without damaging the vehicle electrics.
