Spending $10 or so at your local auto part store for a mechanic's stethoscope should help you pinpoint where the sound is coming from.
If you're planning on selling it I would just go with a used assembly from eBay or salvage yard, especially if you can get a 6 month to 1 year warranty on the used assembly.
