For what it's worth, Toyota is already doing it with the Prius Prime and Fisker with the Ocean.
I saw a write up awhile back looking at the financials of the Prime solar roof (which I think is about a $800 to $1000 option). They figured it would take something like 6 or 7 years to pay for itself.
I think it's more a gimmick than anything else, but if you do plan on longer term ownership of the vehicle and live in a western climate with ample sunshine maybe it could be borderline worthwhile.
