CV axles always spin, even in 2WD. There should be *slight* play in the axles, but not much at all (up and down). In and out and in rotation there is play/backlash (a few mm/degrees).
The slip joints in the prop shafts can hydraulic (stop being able to compress) if they are overfilled with grease, that may have been part of your issue.
