Probably a good idea to drain the case before pulling the seal.
I had to do the rear output on mine years ago, removing the flange bolt was probably the hardest part.

The only problem is, the guy said it was coming from the "input" so I assumed he was seeing gear oil leaking from the bottom area of the mating of the transmission and transfer case.
