Seeking New Tire Advice for NE
I am one of those guys that think there are a ton of great tires. But, only a few that really match well to a particular climate/area and type of primary uses.
I searched the threads, and didn't find a similar question, so here goes.
2000 LTD. stock w/102,000 mi. I live outside of Boston, and don't do off-roading.
Primary concern is with rain and wet traction, including highway in my area, and up into NH ski areas.
I do tow a jet ski on sometimes slick ramps. Plus, tow an enclosed 12' box trailed rated for 4k.
I do have to go thru snow on occassion. But, not deep snow. During the storm and in between plowings, so lets say 4 inchies or so. I have not had to go lower than 4W High, more than once or twice in 4 years.
Am not going for "look".
Look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thank you !

I think the Firestone Destination is a great overall tire. Based on what you would be doing I think it would be a good fit for you.

We used the Yokohama Geolander AT-S on our 05 Tacoma and it was a very nice tire for a daily driver that saw inclement weather including snow. It isn't very aggressive for an all terrain tire and there wasn't a noticeable increase in tire noise.
"The Geolandar A/T-S is Yokohama's On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tire developed for jeep, pickup truck and SUV drivers who want tires that combine a bold off-road attitude with a capable on-road aptitude. Geolandar A/T-S tires are designed to deliver long mileage and promote even wear while providing year-round traction, even in snow."

^ I've heard good things about those Yokos and also Michelin tires.
I would avoid BFG tires though. Especially the Rugged Trail (Fail) type tires they sell. There are people who love them, but in my experiences, they really suck in wet weather driving.

+1 on the geolandars! Have driven them on pretty much everything except deep mud, they are a seriously great tire with exceptional highway behaviour to boot

I picked up a set of Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 tires about month ago. I got them due to the great reviews of them in rain, snow, mud, and dry pavement. They have long tread life as well! They have the little symbols on the sidewall, rain, snow, sun, and whatever the other is, mud maybe.
So far I really like them as well.

Not an off-road tire, but amazing lifespan and rain performance: Michelin LTX M/S2's. Ran pretty good in six inches of October snow last weekend (Yikes!)

These are what I have been running for the last couple of years. I have wheeled in Moab 4 times (a few hundred miles off road there), around Colorado and snow bashing in Colorado. They have done great. I don't think I have ever thought that they have held me back on a trail. On road they are quiet and ride great. I'm definitely happy with them. My next set may be Duratracks because they look meaner!

What do you guys think of the Kumho Road Venture AT KL78's ? Kumho Road Venture AT KL78
To me it looks like a great all around tire. I like the reviews for winter driving, which is something I appreciate driving around Reno/Tahoe/Bay Area(Over the pass).

i personally dont think you are gonna find anything much better than the yokohama Geolandar A/T-S, Michelin LTX M/S2's, or the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10, if you ask me id recomend the Michelins, just cause they are a higher mileage life tire and have superior road manners. you will not be disappointed with any of those tires though

I think I might cry. Seriously, I'm a "match the tire to the application" guy, too, but if you read between the lines, most tire threads are about looks.
It doesn't sound like you have any need for an AT. In an all-season, I think it would be real hard to beat the Michelin Latitude Tour which rates an excellent in both dry and wet braking, and a very good for hydroplaning in the current Consumer Reports tire ratings. Among the top half of tires, wet braking and hydroplaning flip flop on each tire between excellent and very good so it depends how you weight the two relative to each other. The Nokian HT Sport Utility managed an excellent in all three categories but that caused a bit hit in snow traction and ice braking.
You can see where I'm going. There's a lot of objective information in there especially if you ignore CUs rankings and weight the categories yourself.

Th Michelin LTX M/S will give you the best ride and wear, and will perform great in the rain and snow. most bang for the buck. I had them on my S-10
4x4 and got well over 80,000 with them. I'm in Nh and we get quite a bit of snow...never a problem with the LTX.

Looks does have a major part of our decisions.
I thought long and hard about how sedate the look of the Yoko Geo AT/Ss are.I bought them anyway. I'm not at all sorry about my decision.
But... The Duratracks would look great on my rig!

Add me to the list of Yoko Geolander fans. They are affordable and do well in any condition you could encounter.
Having said that I recently was running a set of used Michelin LTX M/S. I could not believe how well they performed for being 5 years old.
I do believe you get what you pay for, Michelins are pricey but as others have stated they wear great and will last longer than most tires out there.

Get a 265/75/16
the larger sized tire does improve wet and snow performance over the OE 265/70/16s capabilities.
Another Hankook fan here.
