Then thats what I will do. The first seal made it to 191K. I can't imagine that I will see 400k miles with her, but who knows. Thanks for the response!

That was my thought too. It definitely gave me pause when I was doing it since stripping that thread would be bad news, but it didn't even look stressed at all when I examined the threads after taking the nut off.
Cheers!

Advice for people without air tools: I drilled the divot out of the nut with a titanium bit. Then my 18v impact wrench took the nut off no problem. The drill bit didn't do any damage to the surrounding threads.

That is what I call a very well made DIY, and with all the added info's on the thread, wow. Keeping as future reference.

Yeah, honestly, I've been discovering most threads are like that here. I've been on a ton of other forums throughout the decade(s), and T4R really takes the cake with the quality of write-ups, the actual reproducible and verifiable info that's given, and just overall willingness to help each other out.
So...we rule!

Just used this thread to address my leaking front output shaft. Went very well! After tax I paid $17.03 for the nut and seal at my local dealer.
As some others did, I used a 1/2" impact wrench to break the 30mm nut loose. I could not see ANY damage to the threads whatsoever and had no issues torquing the new nut down.
Mine must have been leaking for quite some time as I was unable to remove anywhere near a quart of oil from the t-case. Took almost exactly 1.1 quarts to fill it back up.
Thanks a ton,
@ BigFishAllDay

SO I was able to do this today with our day off.
The instructions were perfect to a T. Even with someone who does not have much experience past oil changes this was pretty easy. Big thanks to BigFish.
Being in the northeast, I had a bit of rust on the underside. I was not able to get the zerk fitting cap off for the grease part of the install. I was able to just push the driveshaft about an inch in and rest it on the 3rd member. When i reinstalled i just hooked it back up.
Think its a big deal? Should i be looking for a new(er) front driveshaft that is not so rusted? I am assuming it has not been greased in years.
4high and 4low work great.

I replaced this seal 3 yrs ago and it started leaking again. Just like last time, I'm using the OEM seal. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the oil seal lip has slightly worn into the companion flange sealing surface and therefore the surface might be chewing up these seals.
I'm going to see how long this last, and if it leaks again in the near future I'll probably put an SKF Speedi-Sleeve on it to get a clean sealing surface. For future reference, the companion flange sealing shaft is 41 mm OD, so an SKF Speedi-Sleeve 99163 can be used.

I'm trying to do the rear seal and have two questions:
- Where is the zerk fitting to collapse the drive shaft?
- Tips on how to push the drive shaft away from the companion flange? Mine seemed like it was pretty well stuck together.

Man I wish these pictures were working, I've developed a leak from the front seal sometime in the past week and I'm going to tackle it in the next few days. It seems straightforward enough though, good thing the write up is so in depth.

Thanks
@ BigFishAllDay
.
Just noticed the leak last week. Took care of it today. Amazon'd a Toyota seal.
I should pick up a seal puller tool. After trying to improvise with a few different things I ended up going screw-in-the-seal face to pull it out.

Thanks BFAD for this! This came right up when researching my issue - I have this with my front output on my '98. I knew what I was in for when I saw your name on the how-to, which meant I immediately felt better since there was fantastic documentation!
Hope you and your family are well!

I got an oil change recently and noticed there was a slight leak in the transfer case.
Pic
My questions are:
1. Should I get the whole thing done per OPs 1st-3rd post?
Idk which one is front and rear lmao?
2. Does replacing these seals mess with the transmission at all?
I will go to the hi tech transmission shop my mechanic recommended me since he didn't wanna do this job and get a quote, I'm expecting this will be around $400-500, could be less if they agree I purchase the parts and they just charge for labor.
