Tightening Rear View Mirror

Does anyone know how to tighten the rear view mirror for 3rd Gen. T4R? My 2000 T4R rear view mirror is loose; it seems that you would take the plastic sunglasses compartment off to get to the screws to tighten it. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Leroy

Tighten Rear Veiw Mirror

On the rear view mirror, you have to flip off the piece of plastic surrounding the mirror and the one on the lights. Take out the skrews by the mirror, then take out the one by the lights and let the unit hang by the wire. That will expose another skrew by the light. Take it out and take the mirror someplace you can work on it. The issue here is that the parts around the control are worn out. The skrew is probably not lose. If you can tighten it and it works than good for you. If not, you will notice on the front and back of the control mechanism there is a small space. I found a thin metal bracket that I cut in pieces and shoved in the space. Cut the shims long enough so they are even with the mounting bracket. That way they cannot work their way out. make usre they are really tight. Test it out before you put it back on the car. When you are happy with the tightness of it, put it back together nd hope it lasts for another 8 years. it is easy to take apart and easy to put back together. There are spaces provided that fit a small skrewdriver that allow easy removal of the plastic covers.

I just went and found a plastic stick and put it between the windshield and the bit that hold the mirror.

I know it's ancient

I know this thread is older than dirt, but for anybody who happens to search and is confused by the above description, here is a pic.

The red arrow points to the location of the single bolt you have to remove for the sunglass holder. After you remove the map light lens (I used a small slotted wrapped in electrical tape), it's a #3 phillips.

Then you have to slide the holder toward the rear of the truck to remove it and unplug the electrical connector. The blue arrows point to the ears that need to be slid away from the slots in the roof of the truck.

After that it's pretty straightforward. The rear view mirror has some crush tubes that you'll need to shim out as was previously mentioned. Either that or just JB weld the sucker together.

Sense no one has posted what the "worn parts " are here's a photo of the worn parts and my own fix.

I used 3/16" diameter brass rod and just cut a groove in one end.

Mirror will never come loose again....I hope.

Bill.

You don't even need to put new bits of tubing in there. I just took a screwdriver and opened up the 2 pins a bit and put them back in. That was over 5 years ago and it has been rock solid ever since. The whole thing took about 5 minutes.

I don't have a picture, but that screw should be under the light bulb. It really shouldn't be hard to find, you might be looking in the wrong place.

Pitched my factory rearview mirror into the trash. Hated it from the time I bought the vehicle. The mirror had the auto dim feature and to me it was useless. I put on a GM day/night mirror (stuck to the windshield) and am not sorry that I did.

Once its taken apart, its pretty easy to see where the play is. I used a small piece of rubber cut out of an old bicycle tube under the mount bracket. Worked great.

Toyota must have improved on their rear view mirrors. My 2005 SR5 RVM has never fallen off the windshield (like ever other car I ever owned), and still can be adjusted when a different driver changes the "angle' by hand.
RVM works like when the car was brand new.

Remember using crazy clue and other special glues on my 1995 Cadillac NorthStar (and a new 1995 GM JIMMY), and they just kept falling off after a month or so. What a stupid hassle.

Sold the Caddie because she leaked oil in driveway from that POS NorthStar, but talk about a hype on car "quality' by GM media and management. The Jimmy rotted away from rust, and it was garaged.

Like my favorite mechanic Scotty Kilmer says; American made cars are junk!

Toyota builds the best cars and trucks. No stupid RVM problems.
