Question Vacuum Check Valve for Brake Booster

I am suffering from the seemingly common cold weather brick brake pedal. After searching around it is clear that I need to replace the vacuum check valve on the brake booster and its grommet. I have read in several places that this should be roughly a $25 part but the dealerships I've been calling want to take me for $40. Right now Im playing ring-around-the-rosie with ToyotaPartsCheap.com trying to figure it out and see if that is the $25 place to purchase from.
My purpose in this post is to consolidate some of the good information about this issue under a proper title. If some of the guys that have done this already could post up where they bought their parts and how much (and part numbers if somebody has them) it would be super helpful to not only me but all future searchers.

The part # is: 44730-60060

The trouble with sites such as toyotapartszone.com is that to ship one item is $10. So I bundle at least $100 worth of parts to make the hit I take on shipping more worthwhile to me.

I replaced mine a few years ago. I just bought it at my local dealership. Sure I payed too much but I was back on the road quick.

I went ahead and got a grommet too 90480-2415. It hasn't got cold enough for me to really know if it works or not but i definitely don't want to experience hard brakes ever again. I paid $44.51 at my local dealership but really, isn't $45 a small price to pay to possibly save you from an accident?

I'd also read of this part being around $20.. I've been dealing with the 'brick' since last winter...

I called my dealership yesterday and they said it would be $53. That's still cheap overall, but at double+ what I was originally hoping... ouch.

~$28 from any of the good online dealers. +$10 shipping. Unless you need it TODAY...you'll save a few bucks.

Just curious, my truck has the frozen check valve issue too, but more recently I've noticed a harder brake pedal all the time, no matter what the temperature. Anybody experience this?

Adam F,

It sounds like the brake booster is going south on you. But replace the check valve first (and the grommet), then report back.

Has anyone tried squirting some WD40 in the valve to lube it? It also disperses water and it is kind to rubber seals.

1/9/2015. I pulled the valve back in 2013, filled iboth sides of the valve with WD40, worked the little valve inside open and closed with the spray can straw and dumped out the WD40 re-installed it. The problem hasn't reoccurred since.

The problem as I see it, condensation builds up on the valve and from ice crystals bonding to the carbon and dust bits in the valve, keeps the valve from opening when cold outside. Clean it out, lube it with a light oil like WD40 and it will function like new again.

Bumping this thread. I had a scare the other day with a stiff brake pedal while driving and ordered the check valve + grommet and just got done installing them. No difference. The pedal is still stiff as hell. Trying to decide if a brake fluid flush is next or if the brake booster is toast. Any ideas?

Booster more than likely.

Find one in a yard for cheap. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market. I found one the other month for a friend for $20.

Thanks for the link! I just about shat myself when I saw the reman'd prices on brake boosters. $50 at a pick n pull vs $275+ core is a no brainer. I already have the new check valve and grommet, so time to start studying brake booster install write-ups.

I'm getting this issue when it is colder, had brakes out for a mile or so and went through a stop sign on a [normally] busy highway, after I had just started the truck.

Wondering if there is a good write up to replace the valve? Where is this at on the rig?

Pretty sure I've had this problem since I got the runner, hasn't been a huge deal since I have a 5 Speed, but i need to get it fixed, where is the valve I need to replace? I picked up a junkyard booster a long time ago, but I would prefer to try this first since so much has to get torn out to replace the whole booster.
