Finished my TBU with the 231s on my 2000 T4R, LTD. I did this upgrade because I haul a trailer from time to time, and I will be adding heavier components to prepare for overland expeditions this coming year. I wanted a better breaking system that would not get "wobbly" on long descents, and that would give me piece of mind while traveling fully loaded with my passengers.

Im at a loss here. I did my research and completed the project carefully and even had my brake-bleed job checked by a local brake shop, and it was done correctly with no bubbles and clear fluid.
Install went smoothly, no grinding needed on my 2000 rims. Cut the shield easily with a small cut-off wheel. I used all new parts purchased from AutoZone and flushed the old brake fluid completely.

After completing the install, I took my T4r for a spin to break in the pads using the 35mph-->5 X 4times, and then the 45mph-->5mph X 4times method. Brakes were smoking but I was told that was normal.

The braking that I get from my new Tundra 231s is not nearly as responsive as what I had on my T4Rs with worn out pads. When I slam on the brakes, the car rolls to a stop sluggishly. The pedal feels mushy. There is no quick "small child running out in front of me" braking performance what-so-ever.

So, I am at a loss. Here are the parts that I installed: Perhaps I got something wrong:

As an added note, I also put new drums, shoes and springs in the rear using parts appropriate for my 2000 tr4. I had these checked and fine-tuned by a brake shop after complete installation. All was good.

Sounds like you got air in the ABS pump. Rebleed and try again

Give it some more time. Mine were mushy for about a month and then began to firm up.

Are there any bubbles in the fluid when it is bled?

Take it on some gravel and see if you can get the ABS to cycle, this could force any air in the ABS pump out. You may need to rebleed regardless though.

No, no bubbles. How are your brakes compared to the old t4rs? Are you happy that you did the mod?

Absolutely. It helps with towing immensely. No more brake warping. Worth every penny.

Without bubbles, I am venturing out to say their isn't any air in the system. Did you replace the rear shoes with OEM pads? Members who have used other pads have reported problems with them. I'd check the rear brakes, to make sure they are close as possible to the drum.

But I still believe you need to give them about a month, then bleed them again.
