is this 3rd gen worth it?

details:
it's a '96 4runner sr5 4wd
109k miles. it's in great conidion, just serviced, new brakes.
the only thing really wrong with it is the clear coat on the rood is going.
it's listed for $6,000

my question is, is this a good deal? if not what is it really worth?
and do you think i could sell it in a year for a similar price?

This should tell you everything you ever want to know about purchasing a 3rd gen 4runner. As for the price, look at post #7.

Id run a carfax, only cause the miles are so low. That will ensure you're actually getting something with low miles. For $6k I would say its worth it. You can probably get the guy down to $5500 ...

Just say that the roof will cost about $500 to repaint. (Thats what I was quoted by a mid-range shop down in the "hood")

It's worth it if the maintenance has been done. Even with the lw miles, it's still 15, almost 16 years old. If it hasn't, don't be afraid of one with more miles for the same kind of money that has had most of the bigger ticket maintenance items done.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.
is there really any obvious way to tell if things have been replaced without records? it's from a dealer so i'm thinking they don't have many records on the car.
the main thing i'm concerned about is the timing belt. i've never owned a car with a timing belt so it makes me nervous.

No need to be nervous, it's a non-interference motor. So if it breaks, you're just stranded, no damage.

Check the Carfax, it may show some maintenance records. There is also a Toyota Owners registry that if you punch in the VIN will show dealer service history.

Usually, there will be a sticker on the timing cover showing the date and mileage it was done.

Also look at: water pump,
radiator,
tranny fluid, (check for pink milkshake)
check the ball joints and tie rod ends for play,
look for rust,
look for grease on the rear tires and wheels (sign of bad axle seals)

These are great trucks but at $6000 you're paying top dollar for a '96. Make sure it's a top dollar rig.

i need the car for this winter. so in the next few weeks.
i havent been able to find a similar quality vehicle with similar miles for this price. i really want a 96-98 model because i think those are the best looking.

how do i check for the milkshake?
everything else i know how to check because they're common check items on any vehicle.

upon further reading i have another question. how hard is it to install an external trans cooler?

External trans cooler is super easy, I just did it on my 98. Took me about three hours working slow. You only need common tools. There are several great step by step write ups on here about it.
