Anybody in the market for a 3rd gen?
I saw this browsing searchtempest today. Pretty good deal considering it's a 4WD 5 spd w/ e-locker, fairly low miles, original owner and 2" suspension lift. I noticed it's a '99 but has the 96-98 bumper. Just in case anyone is looking in the SoCal area!
1999 Toyota 4runner 4x4 SR5 E Locker

Scam all over it. It's not a '99 steering wheel either.

I put the 96-98 front on my 99, and I also am going to swap the steering wheel.

It has the pre-99 center console too. It has the clock on the drivers side instead of the center. That would be harder to interchange because of the vent locations. That, the steering wheel, the bumper, doesn't seem like a 99 to me.

Not the 99 MAF either. Seeing the TB changed sticker on the TB cover, I'd mention that in the ad as a salient selling point.

It's a scam. I've actually seen some pretty good ones lately. Saw a great one when I was looking for my 4R, it was pretty believable. Guy even
Emailed me an address where it was, which happened to be close to a friend of mine. I asked him to go look. There was even a 4Runner there but he knocked on the door and the people at the house had no idea what he was talking about when he inquired about the sale.

The bumper swap seemed like a fairly common mod for people into 4runners, but based on everyone's observations it's definitely not a 99+. I don't know how you guys can see all that from that crappy interior photo, but I think it's fishy too at this point. Shame.

Apparently (according to what I've read) a common craigslist scam is to lure you (with your wad of cash) to look at a vehicle (someone elses!), though usually in an isolated neighborhood, and rob you when you get there. If it sounds too good to be true (like the 2001 decked out Tacoma 4X4 with 100K for $2300 I saw yesterday) it probably is.
It's pretty unlikely a guy who has a truck with that many goodies would let it go for $4500, even if he was desperate. It's a steal, but he doesn't say who gets stolen from! I'd take a buddy (maybe an armed one).

A Tacoma for that cheap almost no matter what year sounds like a scam, but the "1999 4Runner" for $4500 didn't seem like it was a too good to be true price, more like a motivated seller price. I looked at the ad again, and I think everyone missed that it appears to have sliders too!

If it's legit, it sounds like a great deal (unless his motivation comes from an engine about to go south or something).

Care to sell your '99 wheel? I like the 4 spoke wheel so much better.

Very good point too. That is a very common scam here in Philly. I can't believe people are still falling for it.

When I went to go check out my 4 Runner I had my AMT Automag .22 magnum in the small of my back just in case, since I had $8000 cash on me.
Mine looked like a "good" deal and it was and totally legit to the extreme but I did see some "deals" that were clearly a scam.
Cars/Trucks that should easily be selling for $10K going for $2k is a pretty good bet its a scam.
That 4runner sounds like it should be at least $9000, so for $4500 it has to be a scam.

Don't be too hasty guys. Could be legit.
The ONLY problem I see is the guy confused the year of his rig, its clearly a 96 or 97. (maybe he is looking to upgrade to a 99, and he was so focused on it that he accidentally typed in 1999 for his truck's year)
A stock 1996 would go for about that much, maybe he is just in a rush to sell and doesnt have time to part out the mods.
That being said, be VERY cautious as you would with ANY used car purchase or a site like craigslist.
