eBay.

There is a set there now (or was a couple days ago), but the seller has lost his mind on price IMO. IIRC > $250.

I happen to find these (under the related listings section eBay displays; I suspect one of my search words was missing from listing) with a make offer. I did. He took it and I'm a happy DIY-er.

Good luck,

Eddie

Installed new upper & lower ball joints (well passenger side upper, ran out of time to do drivers side) in my daughters 96 w/ 298k. Her boyfriend had bought MasterPro from O'Reillys, hopefully they arent complete junk. They did have zerks in them.
I did notice that the outer tie rod ends seem awfully sloppy. Is it best to do inners at the same time? What brands do you all recommend.

Unless you count the r&p and adjacent cross member, oil pan, and skid plate I wasn't getting much protection. No adding oil in between, but I only had to loosen part of one side once I had the bolts and nuts off and the thing fell into my hand. FIPG was finished.

Now watch my truck turn into a rusty pile of dust by the end of the week...
Well isn’t that why you have the Highlander now? Not looking forward to my seal replacement in the future sometime....

Hello! New to the forums. Picked up a 2000 4runner SR5, 245k miles.

When going down the highway it was all over that place at 60 mph. Felt like it wanted to dive into the ditch. The tires on it are also the wrong size 245's vs 265's

So, before I can start making it an overlander I have to make it a reliable and SAFE daily driver.

First thing first:

New lower control arms front and rear, sway bar links, wheel and tire balance, alignment, replace noisy 'high flow' exhaust with closer to stock. Resurface front rotors and front brake pads.

Next steps: Replace cheap cold air intake with something more suitable, change diff oil, transfer case oil, Rear drums, new tires, shocks/struts, fix leaky valve covers.

Wait! Which Highlander? My husband's 99 4Runner Highlander.....or the '02 Highlander Highlander? The one we bought and repaired to sell so we could fund a new roof? That we still have a year later? The VW tdi jetta wagon is the spare during repair. Not that I've had anywhere to go lately....

Once the diff is out of the way it's not bad.
A couple of things made life better:
A safe for non-stick pans scotchbrite scouring pad for all the gooey dirt.
and
I finally got a pair of DeWalt DPG82 Dual Mold Goggles. My glasses fit behind them and all the stuff isn't falling into my eyeballs thanks to the gasket.

Exclamation Houston we have a problem...

I had to replace my Right Lower Ball joint today because it failed while backing out of a parking spot at the 7-11 by my house. I feel really lucky because had it failed at speed I might be in the hospital or morgue. I know it's a known issue and I was planning to replace them before it happened but hadn't gotten around to it yet.

The signs were there that something serious was wrong but instead of properly inspecting "Artemis" I made improper assumptions because I've been working on cars for ~35 yrs. I know better than to do that but money is tight, work is slow, and rent is due.

I'd like to caution everyone to be more diligent in inspecting their truck. Artemis had stiff steering, a harsh ride, and could get squirrely especially at highway speeds. I chalked this up to oil leaks wearing out the rack bushings which in turn had caused a slow ps fluid leak. I was dead wrong. The right lower ball joint was dry and ready to pop out, and did so last night while I was backing out of a parking spot.

You are indeed lucky. Did you go straight back in and buy a lotto ticket?

Quite often backing out while turning seems to be the mode of failure. Lots have had the same happen.

Don’t know if you have tried but the “testing method” is not easy to accomplish on ones own with any degree of certainty. That’s why people recommend replacement at a mileage. Takes away the guesswork.

Hope there was not too much other damage.

You read my mind about the lottery

I was thinking I should buy a lottery ticket because no damage occurred other than closing the gap between the hood and right fender lol. Here's a YouTube link to my dodged bullet.
