Car Rack Drama!

Alright,
My wife pulls into our carport with the bike on top. I had an aftermarket Yakima rack with a decent bike tray attached. I ran out of the house as fast as I could but not in time. I knew when she came home that she would run it under--it was just one of those feelings. It was amazing to watch, and painful at the same time. The bike and bar that it was attached to snaped back like a rubber band. This force flung the bike back and the bike slammed against the other side of the roof-dented it all to hell. $1500.00 worth of damage. Got the 4runner back today and it looks pretty good, and got a new Yakima rack installed. Rackers beware, because evidentally this happens alot--make sure you do something to remind yourself that there is something on the roof! By the way, I'll sell the control towers and crossbars for pretty cheap if anyone wants them. The rack was not damaged in this accident by the way, its just that the insurance company bought me a new rack so...
This rack only fits the 4runner with the factory rails. The control towers slide in and then the crossbars (58 inches accross). The bike was only slightly damaged.

ouch, that sucks. my way of remembering is to put the garage door opener in the back of the truck, that way i have to stop and get out to open the door and then i'll see the bikes.

that's a good idea mike

you can also mount a mirror on your garage so you see the bikes as you're pulling up.

I took out a sign at a Burger King drive-thru this way. Thank god the sign was weaker than my bike and rack.

I still get a little freaked out going under bridges. I know that most are high enough, but still...
I even slow down sometimes. Like thats going to make any difference!
